New Trend Emerges in Auto Sales

Cars are a huge part of the American way of life. In many ways, it defines who we are and what we stand for. In the past, picking a car out was often about style, performance or even reliability. These days things have changed, now Americans are picking cars based of fuel efficiency. This is not to say that the glory days of fuel guzzling SUV’s are over, but right now, with summer gas prices expected to top 4 dollars a gallon, fuel efficient cars are flying (if cars could fly) out of dealerships. Manufacturers everywhere are offering savings on both new and used fuel efficient models.

Another thing driving the market is the often discussed new federal fuel regulations calling for higher fuel standards by 2016 and 2025. One would think hybrids would also see an increase in sales, but the majority of cars being sold are still all gas powered. If you are curious about which car still rates as the most fuel efficient that would be the Smart car, with an average of 35.8 mpg. Most Asian made brands did well, 24 to 27 mpg. Average American made cars finished third with 22 mpg, but part of that is due to their large volume of SUV’s and trucks that they sell. Not surprisingly, Land Rover came in last at 15.3 mpg. At Ford Focus Palm Springs you will find the best deal around!

That being said, even if you don’t have a hybrid or even very fuel efficient car, there are many routine things you can do to increase your millage and save money. Most don’t take much effort on your part and they can all add up to stretch your hard earned dollars further.

Change your air filter. A dirty filter reduces the amount of air being sucked into the engine for combustion. This in turn reduces the efficiency of the fuel being burned. Changing the filter is a very simple task and something you can do yourself. Any auto parts store will have the filters you need and just consult your manual to find out where it is located under the hood. Doing so can increase fuel millage by up to 10% or 39 cents a mile.

Check your alignment. It can also make a huge difference in fuel efficiency. Not only that but it wears out your tires faster and forces your engine to work harder. Sadly this is not something you can do yourself and it requires a mechanic. It isn’t too pricey though and can also increase millage by 10%.

Other things you can do are to make sure your tires are properly inflated and get a tune up as well. While nothing is going to give you the efficiency of a new car or hybrid, doing these simple things can help go a long way, literally.

Here at used cars Chicago you will find a deal you will love.

Tip-of-the-Iceberg Tips About Auto Shipping

While you may wax poetic over that spiffy new car of yours, when it comes to transporting it, you are right back down to earth. You want to make a careful, well-researched analysis of the auto shipping industry and its various companies. There are some basic steps to this process of finding the right company for you. Forget the infinite tiny details and go straight to the basics as outlined in the following paragraphs. These are key steps to take to successfully move your car from here to there.

Don’t just hire the first company in the phone book. Take time to research several companies and then compare prices and services. Even if bargaining is not your strong suit, it is appropriate here. At the very least let them think you have better offers from others and make your exit if their terms don’t seem reasonable to you. This is no small package you are shipping and the transportation of your car will be expensive, but the honest, dependable company will allow some wiggle room in their pricing and offer various options.

If a company quotes only a firm price and will not budge even to offer you some perk or bonus, you don’t need them. They have lousy customer service and you can do better with another company.

You want to take time to distinguish between companies which charge royal prices but do not live up to expectations and companies which charge a lot because they are actually among the best in the business. One way is to do your homework and check the company’s history, if possible, as well as do general internet-based research to see how well it is doing. The other way is to observe the company’s attitude: costly but professional companies are clearly oriented towards pleasing you by willingly proving that their service is the best.

Usually the companies which are only faking high standards to justify high prices will try to rush you into signing a contract. They get away with this by hiring clever salespeople. These people will not bargain or will do so reluctantly unless they have really astronomical prices, and they will be unable to prove any level of competence.

They will either spend little time trying to convince you, or they will start bargaining themselves, rather than offer you a range of professional options and ask you for your preferred ranges of price. A common strategy is to make you feel as if you were making a mistake by not choosing their services.

There are bar managers who will not oblige a paying customer when they ask for a clean glass, surprising as it may sound. The first step towards ensuring the best auto shipping service is to look out for companies which want to bully you out of your money without guarantee of delivery.

How to Build a Pinewood Derby Car

When I was kid in the Boys Brigade, a group very similar to the Boy Scouts, we had an annual tradition that we looked forward to every year: The Pinewood Derby. Primarily a Boy Scott event, the derby is an event where boys take solid blocks of pine wood and carve them into cars and race them.

Cubmaster Don Murphy from Pack 280 created the even in 1953. Murphy had a son who was too young participate in the annual Soap Box Derby races and he suggested they make and race little wooden cars instead. The first event was a success and soon the event began to spread.

Living up to its name, the scout is given a solid block of pine wood, 4 wheels and 4 nails for axles and told to make a car. The car must use all 9 pieces, weigh under a certain amount (usually 5 oz.) and fit on the regulation sized track. The rest is up to the scout.

The most important part of the race is for the scout and a loved one, usually father, grandfather, or weird uncle, to spend time with the scout creating the car. The car can be whittled with a knife, saw a rotary tool or any other shaping tool. The wheels are attached by driving the nails, to use as axles, through the tire hub and into the wood.

There are no set rules for the design but there are some common things to keep in mind when making yours. One is design. A car built for speed is sleek and aerodynamic. Endless sanding and polishing go into the body to make sure that there is as little wind resistance as possible.

Weight is one of the most important aspects of the car. It should weigh the maximum amount of weight, usually 5 ounces, but that is just the beginning. Grooves and holes are carved out to add weight. Lead fishing weights are melted and poured into the groove to add weight. It is a heavily debated process, as some insist weight should go in the very front, some in the middle, some on top or on bottom. Each person has their own opinion.

Equally important are the wheels. The tires need to on tight but not too tight, as to prevent turning. On the opposite side they need to be loose enough to spin, but not wobbly. You have to polish the nail axles to make them slick and add lubrication to ensure the spin properly. The tires also need to have some polish as well, to make them slicker, but not too slick, because they need to grip the tracks. Many people sand the inner and outer edges of the tires down to make them more narrow and reduce friction, but just like the weights, everyone has their own method of doing it.

Painting the car is probably the most fun. Some schemes are futuristic, some simple, some mimic real race cars and some you have no idea what they are. This is all just for the basic race, not even getting into the best in show and most artistic designs.

Come to car trade ins for a great deal.

A Closer Look At Two Car Companies

When it comes to automotive brands, there is definitely a brand out there that appeals to everyone. Some brands are aimed towards luxury while others emphasize functionality, sportiness or performance. Today we’ll take a look at two very different and unique brands; Ford Motor Company and Jaguar.

No other American brand has lasted as long as Ford. The brand has a large selection of autos from rugged big trucks to SUV’s and affordable sedans. Ford is well known for its ecoboost engines which are designed to improve mpg and reducing toxic emissions. Some of their vehicles are getting almost 40 mpg which is impressive for a non-hybrid.

What makes Ford stand out from the rest? One word: technology. The Sync system lets the driver change audio controls by using their voice. Ford’s MyKey system allows parents to control the audio functions when their teens are behind the wheel. Ford’s cars are generally quite easy on the wallet.

If you have a taste for the finer things in life then consider British company Jaguar. Jaguar also owns LandRover; a company known for producing luxury SUV’s. Shinging stars in their lineup include the performance oriented XF hot rod and the newly redesigned XJ. The XJ is more geared towards luxury and competes in the same niche as top of the line Mercedes and BMW cars. The XF is a mid-sized car that is available with a V6 or an upgraded V8 engine.

Don’t want to spend tons of money? Ford would be your best bet since they have lots of affordable cars such as the Fiesta and Focus. If you want a vehicle that is more luxury oriented then you may want to consider Jaguar instead.

When it comes to maintenance and repair it’s definitely more affordable to own a Ford instead of a Jaguar. As we all know, parts, service and repair for luxury cars is usually a lot more expensive versus that of regular cars.

BlueCar Goes Green,

If you have ever watched a James Bond movie, and hasn’t, then you will have probably noticed the narrow streets and tiny cars in European cities. If you are lucky enough to be in Paris over the next couple of months you might get a glimpse of the small car future. We like to call it the bubble car, but its real name is the BlueCar.

Here is what it is. The BlueCar is an electrically powered car that Paris is making available for rentals. When we say short term, we mean it, as in by the half hour. The project is called Autolib and in a testing phase for the next to months.

The project has an initial cost of around $321 million dollars with the city itself investing $47 million, much of the rest of the money comes from billionaire Vincent Bollore, whose company won the bidding for the project and makes the BlueCar.

The way it works is that people must purchase a membership to be eligible to use the cars. Once registered, they can rent a car at any station for around 4-8 euros per half hour. Dropping off and picking up cars at charging stations will be a simply process run by Bollore’s company.

Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe came up with the idea after the success of his 2007 bicycle sharing system know as Velib. A plan that has been initiated in several other cities as well. Heavy investments have been made in hopes that it will stem traffic and parking problems while promoting green energy initiatives.

While open to tourist, the plan is geared towards those who live in Paris and don’t own cars or rely on the the public transportation system.

The overall concept is to persuade people to shift away from the idea of owning an expensive vehicle in a crowded city to the idea of using a car as needed. The initial test project will consist of 66 cars and 33 stations but is expected to expand to 3,000 cars and more than 1,000 stations in 2012.

Other auto makers are watching the project closely to see its viability. Nissan, Renault and Daimler have invested around 4 billion in electric car technology and if the program is a success they will be vying for their fair share of the untested European market. Other cities would be likely to adopt similar projects as well. Check out the prices at If you are looking for a great car try oklahoma online cars for the best deals.

Incidentally, the very small, 4 passenger car is being made by the famed Italian company Pininfarina, who you might have heard of as the manufacturers of Ferrari and Maserati. While the BlueCar is no Ferrari, Mayor Delanoe fully expects it to revolutionize modern transportation.

Moving Blankets And Their Uses

Aside from leaving your home, one of the hardest parts of moving is making sure all your large items are properly secured and protected for the drive. One of the best ways to do this is by using moving blankets. Quilted moving blankets are ideal compared to the non-quilted because they provide better protection.

Once you find quilted blankets you want to look into the amount of filler used in each one. The amount of filler has a huge impact on how much protection you really get from the moving blankets. The outside material doesn’t matter as much polyester of felt both work fine.

Most moving blankets can be used to protect just about any item in your home if it’s wrapped properly. They are essentially used to protect your furniture from bumps and scratches during the move. They can also be used when storing your items for added protection.

Aside from using your blankets for moving they serve other purposes. Moving blankets can be used as bedding for your favorite pet, in your child’s play room and most recently they have been used to sound proof rooms.

Consumers have the option of renting or purchasing moving blankets. Blankets can easily be rented or purchased from any of your local moving companies. It is just up to you to decide if you need one for an extended period of time or if it’s just for one particular move.

The cost to rent a moving blanket or purchase a moving blanket can sometimes be so close that it makes sense to just purchase the blanket, so you can use is whenever you want in the future. You can choose blankets the range anywhere from $15 to $100.

Most of the blankets you have in your home currently are made to supply warmth and look good in your home. These blankets cannot supply the same protection moving blankets do. Moving blankets are not a waste of money, if you want to protect your belongings.

You may have spent several hundred of dollars on your blankets and using them for one move can cause them to be ruined forever. So you would not only potentially leave the door open for your items to get damaged you could also waste a lot of money because the ruined blanket would eventually need to be replaced. Making smart decisions saves you time and money in the long run.

If you want to find the best moving blankets , then visit Shippers Supplies and choose the most durable moving blankets available.

Using Your Moving Blankets

Moving is stressful, and it’s tedious, and nobody likes to do it. One of the most stressful tasks is ensuring none of your belongings or furniture gets damaged in the process, because when it does happen, it’s often difficult to fix. But an easy way to minimize the damage to your things is by using moving blankets.

Moving blankets come in all sizes, big or small, and can fit around your furniture pieces snugly and not only protect it from being damaged but also protect it from dirt, dust, and water.

The moving blankets also have straps that you can use to secure them. And once you are done moving you can use them to protect anything you have in storage including cars, boats, or furniture.

You can find different types of moving blankets, depending on what you want to cover. You can choose a lightweight or a heavy material, including woven, non-woven and burlap. You also can choose from a variety of different sizes., though the most common size is 72 x 80 inches, which covers most of the bigger furniture.

The usual color is blue or multi-colored and the lightweight moving blankets come in a light blue. You can normally buy them as singles or in dozen packs. The price range of these moving blankets ranges from $6.99 for the lightweight blankets to $15.99 for the heavier furniture pads.

Another way to use moving blankets is to cover the floor of the moving van with a heavyweight woven blanket, thus eliminating the risk of damage from the rough floor to your wood furniture. Once you arrive, you can move the furniture by pulling the pad without worrying about damaging the furniture.

If you are moving the furniture in the back of a truck, use the moving blankets to cover it and keep out the dirt, dust, water and sunlight.

These moving blankets will protect your belongings as well as lasting for years. Use them to protect your belongings while you move, use them to protect cars from the element and use them to protect furniture and belongings in storage.

They are even tough enough to be used in a warehouse setting to protect machinery when not in use. Keep your belongings in top shape by simple covering them with these specially made blankets. They are a cheap solution to keeping your items safe and undamaged.
